Whether you're traveling for business or pleasure, taking your pet with you is often a priority. Amtrak, the national passenger rail service in the United States, offers a variety of pet-friendly policies that make it easy to travel with your furry friend.

Can Pets Go on Amtrak?

Pet-Friendly Policies

Amtrak allows pets on most trains, with a few exceptions. Pets are not allowed on Acela trains, Northeast Regional trains operating between New York City and Washington, D.C., or on trains that operate internationally.

Pets are also not allowed in the following areas of the train:

  • The dining car
  • The café car
  • The lounge car
  • The sleeper car
  • The baggage car

Fares and Reservations

The fare for pets is $26 per pet, in addition to the regular fare for the passenger. Pets must be placed in a pet carrier that is no larger than 19 inches long by 13 inches wide by 11 inches high. The carrier must be placed under the seat or in a designated pet area in the coach car.

Reservations for pets can be made online or by calling Amtrak's customer service center. When making a reservation, you will need to provide the following information:

  • The type of pet you are traveling with
  • The size of the pet carrier
