How to Make a Pet Door
If you're tired of letting your pet in and out of the house all day long, or if you just want to give them more independence, a pet door is a great solution. Here's how to make your own pet door in a few simple steps.
Materials
1. A piece of plywood or plastic that is at least 1/2 inch thick and the appropriate size for your pet 2. A jigsaw or reciprocating saw 3. A drill 4. A router (optional) 5. A pet door kit 6. Screws 7. Wood glue 8. Sandpaper 9. Paint or sealant (optional)
Instructions
1. Measure the width of your pet's chest and add 2 inches. This will be the width of the pet door opening. 2. Measure the height of your pet's shoulder and add 2 inches. This will be the height of the pet door opening. 3. Draw a rectangle on the plywood or plastic that is the width and height of the pet door opening. 4. Cut out the rectangle using a jigsaw or reciprocating saw. 5. Use a router to create a beveled edge on the inside of the hole, if desired. This will help to prevent the pet door from catching on anything. 6. Attach the pet door kit to the plywood or plastic according to the manufacturer's instructions. 7. Screw the pet door assembly into the wall or door, making sure that the top of the door is at least 6 inches above the floor. 8. Seal the edges of the pet door with wood glue or sealant to prevent water damage. 9. Paint or seal the pet door to match the surrounding area, if desired.
