Fleas are common external parasites that can cause irritation and discomfort in pets. If you think your pet may have fleas, there are a few things you can look for to confirm your suspicions.

How to Tell if Your Pet Has Fleas

Scratching

One of the most common signs of fleas is excessive scratching. Fleas bite your pet's skin to feed on blood, and the bites can cause irritation and itching. Your pet may scratch at the bite marks, which can lead to hair loss and skin infections.

Chewing

If your pet is chewing on its skin, it may be trying to relieve the itching caused by flea bites. Chewing can also be a sign of a skin infection.

Visible Fleas

If you can see fleas on your pet's skin or fur, it is a sure sign that your pet has an infestation. Fleas are small, wingless insects that are about the size of a grain of rice. They are typically brown or black in color.

Flea Dirt

Flea dirt is another sign of a flea infestation. Flea dirt is the dried blood of your pet that has been passed by the flea. It looks like small, black specks on your pet's skin or fur.

Tape Test

If you are not sure if your pet has fleas, you can do a tape test. To do a tape test, run a piece of scotch tape over your pet's skin and fur. If there are fleas on your pet, they will stick to the tape. Hold the tape up to a light to see if you can see any fleas.

Prevention is the Best Cure

The best way to deal with fleas is to prevent them from getting on your pet in the first place. A few things you can do to prevent flea infestations include:

  • Regularly grooming your pet
  • Using a flea and tick shampoo
  • Vacuuming your home often
  • Keeping your pet away from areas where fleas are likely to be, such as tall grass and wooded areas
